In 2015, Nancy Karp approached me to help realize her dance piece "Memory/Place", a full evening-length work inspired by the current era of human mass migration that featured this newly commissioned music composition by composer Kui Dong.

Memory/Place is a 16 minute string duet commissioned by Nancy Karp + Dancers. When I met with Nancy for our initial discussion - regarding a concept for the piece - she showed me a copy of an old photo that depicted a wooden structure in which Italian immigrants had stored and ultimately, left their belongings. "Memory" and "place" were two words that came to my mind, so I asked Nancy "How about a piece about memory and place?” and she agreed.

I have worked with violinist Kate Stenberg prior to this piece and I have always enjoyed her musical sensibility as a performer. Both Gianna and Kate were passionate about bringing to life my ideas in the piece and I also appreciated that they were not afraid to inquire about my making any changes to the string writing – we both yielded and stood our ground to ultimately achieve the best result for the music.
